Compressed backpack shoulder straps #experimental

Ongoing project.

Shoulder straps often waste a lot of material because they are cut in freeform shapes. However, in some cases, fabric and foam can be compressed.

What if users could shape the geometry of their shoulder straps themselves?
Instead of cutting material away, the excess remains part of the product.

The shoulder strap is based on a rectangular base shape. By pulling a cord or strap, the material compresses locally and creates a rounded, three-dimensional form where needed.
